Sailing on a Budget: 6 Ways to Spend Less at Sea

Many people think that a sailing holiday is expensive but this is not necessarily true. Once you break down the costs or split costs between friends, a sailing holiday can be quite reasonable. Today, we share how you can sail on a budget with 6 ways to spend less at sea.

1. Consider Your Charter Options

When chartering a yacht – what, when and how you charter makes a difference to the overall cost of charter.

WHAT – type of yacht you charter: for example, catamarans are naturally more expensive than monohull sailing yachts, newer or larger yachts are more expensive than smaller yachts or older models. Depending on what you want, if you charter an older model yacht (knowing that all yachts we rent for charter are in excellent condition) or opt for a monohull vs. a catamaran, you can save money.

WHEN – you charter: if you charter duringApril, May, June, September or October, your charter costs can be significantly reduced compared to peak season – sometimes by up to 40% less! Also, keep an eye on early-booking discounts which are sometimes offered.

HOW – it should go without saying that bareboat charter is cheaper than chartering with a crew.

2. Enjoy Shopping the Local Markets and Dining Aboard

Eating aboard your yacht is one of the easiest ways to save money on your sailing holiday. All yachts have galleys (kitchens) and everything you need to cook and serve meals aboard. Yet dining aboard won’t feel like being on a budget holiday at all. There are so many great markets and shops available in almost every town along the Croatian coast. Shop like a local – visit the fresh fruit and veg markets, the fish market or local butcher and you will be able to eat like Kings for a fraction of the price of dining out. And, is there anything better than being anchored in a bay, sitting on the deck with a gorgeous meal, a glass of wine and watching the sunset? The simplest of meals will feel like a luxury.

3. Dine Out Wisely

Even if you do want to dine out, there are several ways to save money. Croatia has fantastic local Konobas which normally have reasonably priced meals – especially inlesser-known locations. Order a range of dishes and share everything. If you charter with a local skipper, ask for his recommendations – locals always know the best spots to eat for the best prices. Avoid ‘tourist traps’ like dining in the main square or along a promenade. Dine out for lunch instead of dinner, as lunch is typically a cheaper meal. A pizza night is fun for families. 4. Plan your Itinerary

Take some time to plan out a rough itinerary or ask our experienced team for advice. This way, you know the estimated costs of marinas, bays or National Parks. Staying on anchor is obviously the most budget-friendly option. However, if you want to spend a few nights in a marina or port, you can still reduce costs by choosing destinations that are ‘off-the-beaten-path’, for example – staying in Stari Grad or Vrboska on island Hvar rather than Hvar town.

5. Enjoy the Simple Things

The beauty of a sailing holiday is that there is little need to pay for extra activities and excursions – of course, you can if you want but if you are ona budget, it is unnecessary. A yacht is your accommodation, transport and entertainment all-in-one. And, our team can help you plan and prepare for your sailing holiday so there are no major surprises when it comes to costs. You will spend days sailing, swimming, and relaxing. Kids will love swimming, water-sports, snorkelling and exploring ashore. Nights can be spent on the deck playing cards and boardgames. It costs nothing to enjoy the Adriatic, wander through ancient towns, and spend quality time with your family and friends. We guarantee, whatever you do (or don't do), you will enjoy your sailing holiday and create lasting memories. Enjoy the simple pleasures and moments.

6. Sail!

The last – and possibly the best way to save money is to sail! Hoist the sails and use the power of mother nature to save money on fuel costs. Sailing is also a great way to keep everyone entertained. Get the kids involved and they will love it. If you have a professional skipper aboard, they will be happy to teach those interested, more about sailing. There is nothing better than sails pitched against a brilliant blue skyand simply going where the wind blows – these are the moments that will be enjoyed and remembered by all.
